Our company was hired to restore logs, cedar shakes and windows on the Gold Hill Inn, a family owned restaurant located in Boulder County. The project was part of the Backing Historic Small Restaurants Grant Program, a national initiative fostered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The building hadn't seen any maintenance in the last 62 years or so.
All windows were in really bad shape. Mullions had deteriorated significantly, all window sub sills and sill framing were in need of being replaced and several glass panes were broken. Some windows couldn't be opened as they were caulked in place.
In addition, previous contractors had used PL-400 and other hard glues to install glass in place. This lack of knowledge posed a significant challenge for us when it was time to remove broken glass without compromising the structural integrity of the mullions.
The building had shifted so much over the years that the weights no longer fit the weight pocket. As such, the weights had to be ground before new ropes could be installed.
The project was achieved impeccably. We glazed about 52 panes of new glass and rebuilt 14 window sills. All new trims were crafted and our crew went home excited about the results.
